Textbook:

Giancoli and Freedman Physics for Scientists and Engineers, 4th edition

Lab Manual: Oscillations, Fluids, Waves and Optics, developed by George Brown

Labs:

5M must be taken along with 5B. It carries one unit of credit. Students should report to their labs the first week of classes. The instructor for that course is George Brown (gsbrown at ucsc.edu). Please refer to the 5M Lab website for more details.

Evaluations:

Evaluations are based on the students performance in the following tasks. These tasks and their weight in determining the students' ultimate ranking are given below:

Quizzes: Nine half hour quizzes every Wednesday starting January 13.

Weight: 80% (10% each), the lowest quiz score is dropped.

Final: In class closed book final exam: Wednesday March 17, 4-7PM

Weight: 20%

There will be no makeup exams. It is necessary to notify the instructor in advance if there is an acceptable reason why an exam cannot be taken. Because of the number of quizzes given, the lowest score from the set of nine will be dropped, and the grade then based on the remaining eight quizzes. The questions asked on the quizzes will, for the most part, be closely based on homework problems assigned each week. The homework is not turned in, but solutions will be posted on this site after the relevant quiz has been taken. For the final exam, students will be allowed to bring an 8.5 by 11 inch sheet of paper containing any information they please, using both sides. Pocket calculators should be taken to all exams.

Homework:

Homework will be available at this web page.

It will not be graded or turned in but solutions will be made available on this site. The quizzes are closely related to the homework problems and students are expected to complete all the assigned problems in order to pass the class.

Cheating:

Any student found cheating will automatically receive a zero on their test. A score of zero on any test results in a fail grade for the course as a whole. Students who take any test in earnest will receive at least one point for their efforts.

Contact Information:

It is crucial that the instructor is able to contact students on an individual basis. All UCSC students must be able to access the email that they have listed through AIS, or notify the instructor of any change of email address.
