Lab Manual

Labs:

6AL must be taken along with 6A. It carries one unit of credit. There will be 8 labs, each three hours, one per week. You must attend the section that you you are registered for. You are not allowed to attend other sections except in truly exceptional and extenuating circumstances and with consent of the T.A. whose lab it is that you wish to attend. You must also notify your regular T.A. of this change. Without a strict adherence to these rules, the labs cannot function.. You must do a minimum of 7 labs to pass the course.

Evaluations:

Evaluations are based on the students performance in the following tasks. These tasks and their weight in determining the students' ultimate ranking are given below:

Quizzes: Nine half hour quizzes every Wednesday starting January 15.

Weight: 80% (10% each), the lowest quiz score is dropped.

Final: In class closed book final exam: Tuesday March 18, 4-7PM

Weight: 20%

There will be no makeup exams. It is necessary to notify the instructor in advance if there is an acceptable reason why an exam cannot be taken. Because of the number of quizzes given, the lowest score from the set of nine will be dropped, and the grade then based on the remaining eight quizzes. The questions asked on the quizzes will, for the most part, be closely based on homework problems assigned each week. The homework is not turned in, but solutions will be put on reserve in the library after the relevant quiz has been taken. For the final exam, students will be allowed to bring an 8.5 by 11 inch sheet of paper containing any information they please. Pocket calculators should be taken to all exams.

Homework:

Homework will be available on the web at http://physics.ucsc.edu/~josh/6A/

It will not be graded or turned in but solutions will be made available on the web through http://eres.ucsc.edu or on the above website. The quizzes are closely related to the homework problems and students are expected to complete all the assigned problems in order to pass the class.

Cheating:

Any student found cheating will automatically receive a zero on their test. A score of zero on any test results in a fail grade for the course as a whole. Students who take any test in earnest will receive at least one point for their efforts.

Contact Information:

It is crucial that the instructor is able to contact students on an individual basis. All UCSC students registered for this course have cats accounts: student_name@cats.ucsc.edu. Those are the ones that appear in the class list information sent to the instructor. It is imperative that messages sent to those accounts are read. If you prefer hotmail, yahoo, or some other ISP, you must forward your cats mail to the email that you actually read. To forward email on cats computers (running "athena") to your regular email address (say name@RegularEmailAddress.blah), type:

chpobox -s name@RegularEmailaddress.blah
