The main interest at present is to use numerical techniques from statistical physics to study the "quantum adiabatic algorithm" which has been proposed for a quantum computer to solve a broad range of optimization problems, see arXiv:0910.1378 and arXiv:0803.3971 (Phys. Rev. Lett. 101, 170503 (2008). Another area of interest is phase transitions in spin glasses. Experience with numerical techniques is necessary. Prior experience with Monte Carlo methods would be useful but not essential.
Interested candidates should send an application to me at peter@physics.ucsc.edu and arrange for three letters of recommendation to be sent to the same address. The position will remain open until filled.
