Homework for Friday, Oct 9. (due in class on Friday).
From the book, Problems:
3-12, 3-17, 3-18, 3-19,3-20

And in addition,
20) For a mass (m) hanging vertically from a spring (k) with a natural length (l) in gravity (g), write the equation of motion and determine the equilibrium position in gravity and the equation for oscillations around equilibrium.

21) For a lightly damped harmonic oscillator (i.e., less than critically damped), driven by a force F=sin(wt+delta),
Show that x=D*sin(wt) can solve the equation for the right D and delta. (What do D and delta depend on?)
Calculate AND PLOT the functions for D and delta as a function of ????.
(Let's decide what to plot them as a function of by vote, i.e., vote on what you think is the most relevant or instructive variable to plot them "against".
What do you think? zack@physics.ucsc.edu ~
